Self-Care for the Busy Mom

While pedicures, dinner with a friend, and girls’ night out sounds incredibly awesome, sometimes it’s just not realistic. As a mom, I’ve heard it more than once. Put yourself first and you’ll be a better mom.  It’s true, and I know it, but I’d rather do really important stuff like do all the laundry and get the dishes out of the sink and into the dishwasher; because that makes me feel better too. In its own kind of way.

Self-care is a necessary component of self-love.  As the phrase goes, you can’t
pour from an empty cup.  You have to take care of yourself first.

I can honestly say that before having a baby I wasn’t the kind of woman focused too much on self-care. When I think of self-care my brain goes straight to nail salons and back massages. While those are great examples of keeping your self feeling and looking great, they aren’t the only options. Sometimes those kinds of options get a little daunting because they can lighten your wallet.  I realized that self-care really didn’t have to cost anything or really a lot. When I changed my mindset I realized that I could enjoy self-care, weather I had money to spend or not.

In today’s blog I am focusing on a few of my favorite ways that I enjoy self-care.  I have come to grips, that with becoming a new mom (wait am I still a new mom, my kiddo turned 6 months old yesterday) I really enjoy self-care. Like I was  explaining above, self-care can mean something different to everyone, but as long as you are taking a little time to maintain your health, you do you in whichever way you see self-care.

Today I’m here to be your excuse smasher! There is no reason that
you can’t take some time for you—and I’ll show you how to do it.

Nourish Your Soul
Every morning I take my pre-natal vitamins and my Pro-Moms Hyperbiotics.  When I first began breastfeeding I wasn’t really sure the benefits of probiotics,  they help us absorb vitamins/nutrients, helps our immune system, keeps our digestive system working well, and many more benefits. Our little ones get their first dose of probiotics from our womb, now I am still nursing and Cal is getting probiotics through my breast milk. It also promotes improved immunity, because this momma has no time to be sick! Our bodies do/did so much work during pregnancy, why not help it out a bit with Hyperbiotics.

A bonus is that they are extremely affordable, I buy them from my local Target. Hyperbiotics  is  specifically formulated for us pregnant and nursing moms and can improve energy and clarity (they even offer a specifically formulated ones for our Kiddos too, check them out here . I know as a VERY busy and new mom that I need all the energy I can get!

The best part about Hyperbiotics formulas…

  • They are vegetarian, non-GMO, and free of lactose, gluten, and sugar. There is also no soy, iron, nuts, artificial flavors, artificial colors, or preservatives.
  • Easy on the stomach while pregnant and doesn’t require refrigeration.
  • Hyperbiotics uses a patented manufacturing process called LiveBac® that enables them to guarantee the viability of their formulas for 18 months after the date of manufacture with zero refrigeration.

Set your alarm to go off 20 minutes sooner
OK, so I know some mornings I have been up all night with my little one and don’t even want to think about waking up any earlier than I have to. But, I have found this to be a major game changer for me!  Consistency is key, so I set my alarm to go off 20 minutes before I actually have to be up. Now it’s your decision what you want to do with this time. I don’t do the same thing every day, but here is a few ideas…

  • Walk your Dog (or cat or rabbit or pot belly big)
  • Take a peaceful quiet shower
  • Read a daily encouragement
  • Meditate
  • Make yourself some eggs & sausage (Whenever I envision a relaxing morning, it involves something off the stove top)

Sit in the Sun (get outside)
Are you a stay at home or work at home mom who feels stuck in the house? Are you a working mom chained to your cubicle?  BREAK FREE MAMAS! Let the kids watch TV for a moment, tell your co-workers you need a second and walk outside. Go outside, turn your face up to the sky, and just Breathe. Just be there. Be in yourself. You spend so much time on everyone else; take this moment for you and the sky. Thankfully my office has a frozen yogurt ice cream truck across the street, so I am always up to going outside.

Try something new
I love trying new things and sometimes throwing yourself off your normal routine is just what we need.  Challenge yourself to  shy away from a life of automation. Trying something new changes our perspective and allows us to see things differently. When we see things differently we see things we previously missed or ignored. This allows us to see new possibilities. This really connected with me when I decided to go for walks around my work. I have found so many beautiful murals, benches tucked away from the world, or even a few beautiful trees on my walks. I would have never noticed these things, had I not taken time for me. Notice the world around you and stop being a robot.

I love Murals… #findthebeauty

Make a List
Make a list of things you loved before becoming a mom. Do one of them at least once a month. There are so many more things that you can do to center yourself in your life. Only you know what would make you happiest. So write it down! I keep a running list of ideas on my phone. You can use whatever works for you. Up next on my list?

The truth is, I’m typically awful at self-care, but I’m getting better. And letting go of the guilt feels good.

  1. It’s so crazy how we have to remind ourselves to do simple little things. Even though I’m not a mom, I can’t tell you much I appreciate when someone reminds me just to stop and eat my lunch outside on a sunny day! It’s the little things that keep you sane.

    1. Yes, Eating my lunch outside once a week is a must:) It’s crazy how the little things can make your day that much better!

  2. If nothing else, I try to have self care Saturdays for myself. That means taking longer than normal showers, luxury baths, light my fave candle..just little things for me and my sanity.

  3. Love your point that self-care doesn’t have to be a special salon day! Sometimes it’s all about shifting our mindsets to appreciate those little moments in our days.

  4. Thank you for the tips. I’m a big fan of walking outside on my lunch break. I have discovered new places to eat, a cool bookstore and last but not least gorgeous flowers along the way.

  5. Oooh yes, taking time for yourself is so important! One of my favorite things to do that’s self-care when I’m stuck at work is to go for a walk outside. We’ve got a nice walking trail around our corporate park, and if my coworker and I need to take a break we’ll go walk the trail for a bit 🙂
